What is a "Cargo Cult"?
The term "Cargo Cult" was coined by an anthropologist.
During World War II, American, British and Australian troops occupied
islands in the South Pacific. The island natives were given their first
introduction to Western Culture by the troop presence. When the war was over the troops left the islands
and the island natives began to long for the material riches enjoyed by their new friends. Anthropologists believe Cargo
Cults were formed to encourage and prepare for the return of the "White
Man" and the riches
they would bring with them. One of the best known Cargo Cults is the Jon Frum Movement on
Tanna, an island in Vanuatu, Melanesia.
